Are you going through a divorce or about to? And you’re trying to figure out how to plan spring break with children? Hi. I’m Marie Drake of The Drake Law Firm. Today, I’m going to talk to you about shared custody and spring break. My first point is put your child’s needs first. So, make sure that you make sure that your child knows where you’re going or with whom you’re going and if your child is spending time with your soon-to-be-ex-spouse, make sure he or she knows that. So, it can be a super exciting time for your child getting to be away from school and going on an adventure, hopefully. But be careful and don’t over discuss. Don’t talk about the divorce or do something like that. That’s almost always inappropriate.
My second point for spring break and shared custody is to plan ahead.
So, if you have a divorce pending in Colorado, you are going to need written permission from your soon-to-be-ex-spouse to take the children out of state or you’re going to need a court order. So, the best way to go about planning for spring break is open and honest communication with your soon-to-be-ex-spouse. And be sure to communicate with your ex-spouse or soon-to-be-ex-spouse first. Don’t discuss some amazing trip to the Galapagos with children before daddy or mommy has approved it. So, you just need to make sure that you’re actually co-parenting and not just planning some amazing vacation that dad is gonna look like a jerk to if he disagrees.
My third point for spring break and shared custody is consider alternating the week.
So, in 2023, dad gets spring break with the kids. 2024, mom does. And going forward, mom has all even number of years, dad has all odd number of years. But if you can’t get the time off work, consider splitting the week because spring break can be a lot on parents if they have to also go to work and plan childcare full-time for little kiddos.
