With all the options for picking a divorce attorney in Colorado, how do you pick the right one?
Hi, I’m Marie Drake of The Drake Law Firm, and the right one. But today seriously, I’m going to talk to you about what you should look for when you’re looking for a divorce attorney. One of the first things you should do when you’re looking for the right divorce attorney is go to their law firm website and read the reviews. Now if a restaurant has 200 reviews, not all of them are going to be great. But are you still going to go to the restaurant? If most of the reviews are good, probably. And, well, I do. But that’s one of the things we should do is read those reviews and read the ones that aren’t that great. Like, find out about the law firm from people who have actually hired the law firm. Another consideration, of course, when you’re looking for a family law attorney is cost. And what you should ask when you go in for your consult is what will this cost in general? And how do you handle the workflow? Meaning, is the 450 dollar an hour partner going to be taking care of your financial disclosures? I hope not. I hope that that is done by a paralegal at less than 200 an hour who can put together all of that paperwork for the partner or even better yet, the associate to review. Because those kinds of costs and that kind of work should not be done at a high hourly rate. So make sure you understand who does the work and for how much an hour. Or if it’s a flat fee, what that flat fee encompasses with detail. It’s really important, but you’ve got to be the one to ask the question. Another factor in choosing a good family law attorney is to look at that person or that law firm’s area of expertise. Now if they do a little of everything, you know, hey, did you have a car accident? Oh, you’re having an HOA problem? Can I do your estate plan? And, yes, I can handle your divorce. Be a little bit careful of people like that. I’m not bashing general practitioners, but if you have a divorce that you care about, and most people do, you want someone who is focused on that area of law, up to date on all the case law. And maybe even if you have a closely held family business can look at the value of that family business, look at the P and Ls, read that profit and loss statement, and give you a real opinion because of their years of expertise. If you’re trying to choose the right family law attorney for your divorce, what I suggest doing is going to a couple of initial consultations and bring the same set of questions. Write them down. Put them in your phone, but have them at hand so you can ask the lawyer you’re meeting with what the answers are to the questions that we’ve discussed in this video. It’s very important because divorce is a personal journey and you want a good fit. This is something that you’re going to be with this attorney for months and this is something you need to be comfortable with in terms of the person.
If you’re looking for a good family law attorney, remember you need a good fit, you need to know the person on this very personal journey of divorce. And you need to ask the questions that we’ve gone over. Read the reviews. Ask about cost. If anyone is cagey about your questions, that’s a flag. You should have someone who’s going to be honest with you about the full process. And if you have questions like this and want to meet with us, we’re happy to meet with you here at The Drake Law Firm and we’re standing by to help.
